The New Second-Tier Lawyer Jobs

By , January 17, 2012

Nobody seems to have told the young people trying to get into law school, or the law schools themselves for that matter, that the $200,000 lawyer jobs practically don’t exist anymore.  Why are law school tuitions so expensive? The market just doesn’t accept those kinds of costs anymore.

Today, whether you the a scientist or a lawyer or happen to work at any of a number of prestigious jobs, you usually find that there are just two tiers of jobs in your field – there is a small number of permanent positions that pays reasonably well, and there are the have-nots.

These aren’t people who have no college education. Usually, these are people with the same kinds of qualifications as the people in the well-paying positions. But they are forced to accept shadow jobs that have no prestige and no perks.

Most new lawyer jobs today pay you what paralegals or legal secretaries used to make 15 years ago. They have the same qualifications and the same potential as any other lawyer. But they are hired as contract workers and always will be. And oh, they will never be on path to making partner. Their salaries may be satisfactory at $50,000 a year – but it isn’t what the lawyer is supposed be making.

The law firms have a good argument to defend their decision to strip down what being a lawyer means. Cutting down pay means they won’t need to ship jobs to India and China. And for the pay cut, they expect less – lawyers no longer have to stay married to the office. They are not expected to travel or give their lives up. They feel they these new lawyer jobs are kind of family friendly.

People blame the recession quite squarely for all of this of course. Clients just aren’t willing to pay lawyers their inflated rates anymore. Law firms have found themselves in a position where they can’t really cut down on the kind of salary they offer to all the lawyers.

If they did that, they would lose talent, and their reputation. Among the legal profession, they would come to be known as low-level firms. For this reason, they’ve devised this ingenious two-tier system – where they continue to pay a handful of associate lawyers what they always did, but pay all the other lawyers a fraction of that sum. It gets the job done and it helps them save face.

It’s like the associate lawyers are the union workers and everyone else is just a poor bloke who is new to the game. They call them career associates. It’s like outsourcing right within this country – to a poor part of town or to a poor suburb. Lawyers fresh out of legal school with $150,000 loans find this very inconvenient. But there are lawyers who find this very convenient too. The traditional career path of the lawyer requires total dedication. People quickly burn out living life like that.

O.J. Simpson a murder ?

By , August 16, 2007

oj simpsonNEW YORK (AFP) – A small New York firm is to publish “If I Did It,” former American football star O.J. Simpson’s account of the 1994 murders of his ex-wife and one of her friends, the company said Wednesday.

Beaufort Books was aiming for an October 3 release of the book, in which Simpson describes how he would have killed Nicole Brown Simpson and friend Ronald Goldman.

Plans by Simpson to release the book last year sparked a wave of outrage across the United States, prompting publisher HarperCollins to scrap the title and Fox News to cancel an accompanying television interview.

Simpson, 60, who always has vehemently denied involvement in the killings, was acquitted of killing ex-wife and Goldman after a racially charged trial in 1995. The verdict sparked outrage in much of America.

He was later found liable for the deaths in a 1997 civil suit and ordered to pay 33.5 million dollars in damages to Goldman’s family.

The case took a further twist when a US judge in March ruled that any income from the book should go to the Goldman family to cover the damages award made in the civil case but never paid by Simpson.

Another judge later awarded the rights of the book to the Goldman family.

A spokesman for literary agent Sharlene Martin, who handled the deal, earlier said that the book was to be repackaged by the new publisher.

The publisher “pledged to leave Simpson’s manuscript entirely intact, but they will also add key commentary,” spokesman Michael Wright said in a statement, without elaborating on the commentary.

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – A Los Angeles woman who was driving a car that Lindsay Lohan is accused of chasing through city streets in July sued the troubled actress on Tuesday, claiming her behavior could have caused injury or death.Tracie Rice is seeking unspecified damages for assault and infliction of emotional distress by the 21-year-old actress, who was arrested and accused of criminal drunken driving and drug possession after the predawn chase.”What Miss Lohan did that night was extremely dangerous and reprehensible. Someone could easily have been killed or seriously hurt because of her irresponsible decisions,” Rice said in a statement released by her Los Angeles attorneys.

Lohan was arrested in the early morning hours of July 24 by police in Santa Monica, California, a beach community in Los Angeles County. It was the second time the actress had been charged with drunken driving in recent weeks.

The lawsuit said Rice was a passenger in a car driven by Michelle Peck, the mother of Lohan’s personal assistant who quit working for the actress only hours earlier.

The suit describes a high-speed car chase during which Rice and Peck believed they could be carjacked or shot at.

“Plaintiff was convinced that their lives were in danger and that they had to outrun the pursuing car or they might be killed,” the suit said.

Peck led the car Lohan allegedly was driving directly to the Santa Monica police station, where officers questioned all involved and arrested Lohan.

The actress was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, cocaine possession, bringing a controlled substance into custody and driving on a suspended license.

At the time, Lohan was wearing an alcohol monitoring bracelet following a recent stint in a rehabilitation clinic, and her lawyer issued a statement saying the actress suffered a relapse and was receiving medical care.

Lohan’s spokeswoman was not immediately available for comment on the lawsuit on Tuesday.

Lohan, whose recent movies “Georgia Rule” and “I Know Who Killed Me,” bombed at box offices, crashed her car in May and was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving. She entered a 45-day rehabilitation program and was released in mid-July, only days before the car chase.

She shot to stardom as a child actress in Disney movies such as “The Parent Trap” and “Freaky Friday.”

Saddam Husein Hanged to Death

By , December 30, 2006

Saddam Hussein, former Iraqi president was hanged to death this morning. The procutions i think it’s not fair. It look like it’s has been arrage by America. Two of Saddam Lawyer was been killed and many lawyer change during procecution.

This not suppost to happened because Saddam Hussein suppost to be protected because he was former president. Even he was make mistake when killing their enemy. If Saddam can be hang.Bush Senior and Bush Junior also should be hang and can be hang. They killed thousang of people in Iraq and Afganistan.

Why people close their eye when that blood sucker(Bush) killing innocent people in Iraq and Afganistan. More than 3000 US soldier died because his stupid action in Iraq.

Human Rights Watch criticized the execution, calling Saddam’s trial “deeply flawed.”

“Saddam Hussein was responsible for massive human rights violations, but that can’t justify giving him the death penalty, which is a cruel and inhuman punishment,” said Richard Dicker, director of Human Rights Watch’s International Justice Program.

This sentence was not right. But nothing can we do because Saddam is already dead right now. But it’s could be prevented in the future. Everyone has their right to get the best trial. We cannot assume that person guilty if there no prove.

President of any country should be protected. But this time Bush want to cover his mistake by killing Saddam. I think it just cause more violent in Iraq. I predicted there will more violent in Iraq. Sivil War will start in Iraq. The most important more US soldier will died in Iraq.

More parent will lost their sons in Iraq because of Bush mistake. US should called back all their soldier. They can be heroes at Iraq. They just wait to be killed by them because Iraq was one of US failed project. US help Iraq to stop Iran but now Iran become more stronger and Iraq was collapse with sivil war among Sunnis and Shiites in Iraq.

We as world civilians, what should we do? Just watch or try change it? Bush already lost. He should accepted. Bring back US soldier home. Let them live happily with their family and not let them died in Iraq. They don’t deserve to died because Bush want to control the world oil supply.
